Absolute Beginner Sewing Machine Lessons

Beginner/Intermediate Sewing Skills

Ready to level up your sewing skills? Learn to enhance your clothes with zippers, buttons and pockets, read patterns, and polish your projects with various finishing seams.

  • Builds on the Absolute Beginner class!

Hemming & Taking In One-Day Workshops

Absolute Beginner Hemming & Taking In | Sun. Oct 20 | 12-3:30pm
Advanced Beginner & Up Hemming & Taking In | Sat. Oct 19 | 3-6pm
$90-175 sliding scale

Are you ready for clothes that fit you perfectly?! Learn how to hem and take in pants, skirts, dresses, and pullover tops, and leave with your clothes altered... by YOU! Heads up, this session will teach you how to make your items shorter or smaller, not bigger or longer (that’s a future session!). 

  • BYO clothes to alter; other basic materials included

  • BYOsewing machine is optional - machines will be provided

  • Small class size, personalized instruction

The Absolute Beginner session starts with a sewing machine tutorial, then moves on to altering your garments. Absolutely no experience required.

The Advanced Beginners & Up session start with some altering how-tos, then gets to work on your clothes. (This session is appropriate for students who can thread a sewing machine and sew a straight stitch, backstitch, and zig zag stitch.)


About the Instructor

Meagan Woods @meaganawoods is a costume designer and multimedia artist with two decades experience sewing. Her work has been shown at NJPAC, Bryant Park, Lincoln Center and venues across the US, Canada, Portugal, France, Taiwan, and The Philippines. She loves teaching and sharing her passion for the arts, and is looking forward to de-mystifying the sewing machine through this workshop series- absolute beginners are absolutely welcome!

~ Other Important Info ~

Attendance/Refund Policy

  • In the unlikely event that the class doesn't run, we will offer a refund (less fees).

  • If the class runs, we are not able to offer refunds, make ups, or payment credits for missed classes.

  • If you have a paid and confirmed spot and are no longer able to attend the session, you will have an opportunity to transfer your registration to a friend. (Whole class transfers only, no transferring single sessions.)

How to Register

Your payment confirms your registration. You can expect a confirmation email within a few days, too!
Payment links will be disabled once the session is full – please keep an eye on your email and our IG @smushgallery for updates!

Guidance on Using the Sliding Scale
Low End - For those who may stress about meeting basic needs and have limited expendable income. This rate is offered in solidarity with low income/low asset artists and is bridged by the High End rate.    

Mid Range - For those who are regularly able to meet their basic needs and have some expendable income. 

High End - For those who are comfortably meeting their basic needs on a regular basis and who enjoy a substantial expendable income. This cost bridges the Low End rate.

Please be mindful that selecting a rate at the lowest end of the scale when you can truthfully afford the higher end limits access for those who truly need the gift of financial flexibility.
