All Earth Temple programs are FREE. This project is paid for by a grant from the government of Jersey City. We believe that spaces to connect deeply with one another and the non-human world should be public, free, and abundant. The Earth Temple is a month-long glimpse of that world -- a world in which coming together to love, grieve, and celebrate Earth and our roles within it is a cultural norm.
If you would like to provide additional support for our work, you can venmo us at @nocturnalmedicine, cashapp us at $nocturnalmedicine, or donate here. All donations go towards supporting this and future Nocturnal Medicine programs. We are a nonprofit 501c3.
ABOUT
Earth Temple: A Sanctuary for Ecological Grief is an immersive installation: a non-denominational house for ecological emotion and spirituality for the Jersey City community. We invite you to come into and use the space as you wish -- to think, dream, pray, cry, rest...
Understanding that today’s layered environmental crises evoke a complexity of emotion in many of us -- including fear, anger, grief, powerlessness -- Earth Temple aims to offer a place for these emotions, to approach them with respect and care, and to invite them to become channels towards deeper accountability and connection to our environment and to one another.
Open to the public for one month, Earth Temple imagines a world where shared spaces for emotional and spiritual connection to our environment are a plentiful urban resource. The space will be open regularly for visiting hours, and activated with programming throughout the month. In addition, the space will offer channels for directing visitors towards active environmental justice initiatives.
The project lives in honor of the indigenous people and cultures of Turtle Island, in love for the people, creatures, and places who have been harmed by this era of colonialism, exploitation, and pollution, and in response to the cultural paradigm of separating “human” and “nature” characteristic to the Western worldview.
Supported by public funds from the Jersey City Arts and Culture Trust Fund.
Please Note: Earth Temple is not fully wheelchair accessible; guests in wheelchairs will not be able to access the bathroom or some parts of the installation. Please email lbelcic@nocturnalmedicine.com for accessibility requests.
